About This Tour
Set sail on a journey through time as you explore the charming city of Alexandria — the ancient pearl of the Mediterranean and one of the most historically rich cities in Egypt. This Alexandria City Tour from Alexandria Port, offered by Tango Travel, is specially designed for cruise ship passengers seeking to experience the grandeur and grace of Egypt’s most European-inspired city.
Founded by Alexander the Great, Alexandria was once the capital of Greco-Roman Egypt and home to the legendary Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Today, it is a city of mystery and beauty where Roman ruins, Islamic mosques, Coptic churches, and modern wonders stand side by side.
In this private tour, you will visit iconic landmarks like the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, the Pompey’s Pillar, the Roman Amphitheatre, the majestic Qaitbay Citadel, and the ultramodern Library of Alexandria. You’ll also have time for a delicious seafood lunch overlooking the Mediterranean and to walk along the scenic Corniche.
Let Tango Travel be your guide through Egypt’s most romantic coastal city — where history and sea meet in perfect harmony.

Pickup from Alexandria Port – Start the Exploration
Your day begins with a warm Egyptian welcome. As you disembark from your cruise ship at Alexandria Port, your private guide from Tango Travel will be waiting for you at the exit gate, holding a sign with your name.
You’ll board a comfortable air-conditioned vehicle and start your day with an introduction to the city's fascinating past, from the age of Alexander the Great to Cleopatra, the Romans, and the modern Egyptian era.
First Stop: The Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa
Descend into the most mysterious site in Alexandria — the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, an underground burial site dating back to the 2nd century AD. This site is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages and is unique for its blend of Pharaonic, Hellenistic, and Roman art and architecture.
Second Stop: Pompey’s Pillar & Serapeum Ruins
Next, head to one of Alexandria's most iconic monuments — Pompey’s Pillar, a towering 27-meter red granite column built in honor of Emperor Diocletian in the 4th century AD. Though often misunderstood (it has nothing to do with Pompey the Great), this is the largest Roman triumphal column outside of Rome.
Surrounding the pillar are the ruins of the Serapeum, an ancient temple complex that once held the famed library annex and a colossal statue of Serapis.
Third Stop: The Roman Amphitheatre
Continue to the only Roman Amphitheatre ever discovered in Egypt. This well-preserved semicircular theatre, with its 13 white marble terraces, was used for musical performances and public debates during Roman times. It showcases the architectural finesse of the ancient city.
Fourth Stop: The New Library of Alexandria (Bibliotheca Alexandrina)
No visit to Alexandria is complete without exploring the modern-day tribute to the ancient Library of Alexandria — the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, inaugurated in 2002.
This futuristic complex is a symbol of intellectual revival and features:
A main reading hall that can hold 8 million books
4 museums including the Antiquities Museum
Art galleries and exhibition spaces
A planetarium (optional)
Sculptures and inscriptions from dozens of world languages
Enjoy a guided tour of the library, admire the architecture, and explore the exhibitions inside.
Lunch Break: Mediterranean Feast by the Sea
After a full morning of discovery, it's time to indulge in an authentic Egyptian seafood lunch overlooking the beautiful Mediterranean coast. Choose from fresh grilled fish, calamari, shrimp, or mixed grills, paired with rice, tahini, and Egyptian salads.
Fifth Stop: The Citadel of Qaitbay
After lunch, visit the fortress built on the ruins of the famous Lighthouse of Alexandria — the Citadel of Qaitbay, constructed in 1477 AD by Sultan Qaitbay to defend against Ottoman invaders.
The lighthouse that once stood here was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Today, the fort provides:
- Stunning sea views from its towers
- A walk along the harbor walls
- A small naval museum
- Photo opportunities with crashing waves and the open sea
